II. Church History |

|
I. Founding Six Mile Baptist Church was initially founded on July 25, 1836 as a desire to form “one body” that would be known as the Six Mile Church of Christ. Later that day it was officially associated with the Southern Baptist Denomination, being named Six Mile Baptist Church of Christ. In September of 1836, Six Mile Baptist Church joined the Twelve Mile River Baptist Association. Interestingly enough, Six Mile Baptist and Keowee Baptist tried to withdraw from the Association in 1839, but were denied as they would not give a reason for leaving the association and the Law of the Association required that a reason be given. Six Mile Baptist Church is one of the oldest still existing entities in the town of Six Mile, predating any other current business or establishment by several years.
II. Church Buildings

III. The Six Mile Baptist Academy As early as 1876 there was a desire among the member churches of the Twelve Mile Baptist Association to build a Christian high school to educate the local boys and girls. After several attempts to charter a new school, the Six Mile Baptist Academy opened on the first Monday in October, 1910. The school did not remain open for very long, as one of the major buildings (the girls dormitory) burned down in 1919, but the buildings found many uses over the years, including the Six Mile Retirement home housed in the other girls dormitory.

The very first Six Mile Baptist Church was a log structure with no windows. The only way for light to come into the building was through an open door or small cracks between the logs of the building. This building was used for a number of years until a framed structure was erected on the same location. There are no records as to when this church was built, but it was used until it burned in 1894. After the burning of the second building, the congregation nearly disbanded. There was a great deal of dissension as to whether the church should be rebuilt at all. When this question was raised at a church business meeting, the congregation found themselves fired up again and chose to rebuild on the west side of the public road. (the location of the current church property) The third building was completed in 1895, and housed a membership of around 116. |
|
This building was used until it again burned in 1908. It is believed that the public school was using the church building for housing classes and the fire may have somehow been connected to that use. Again, the church body found it hard to get support in rebuilding the church. Within a short time, the church was being rebuilt for a fourth time. This fourth building would not become the victim of fire, but would rather see a boom in membership and the necessity for growth.

In 1928 the fifth, and current, building to house Six Mile Baptist Church was begun. There was discussion of using the old Baptist Academy to house the church, but it was eventually decided that it would be better to build something new that would be designed to meet the needs of the church. Amazingly, the church was built with very little money. The members of the church at the time would come together to construct what they could as they had the materials and availability of labor. One member would donate the lumber, another would cut the lumber into logs, and yet another would haul the lumber to the construction site. Thus, the current site of Six Mile Baptist Church was completed. |

God There is one and only one living and true God. He is an intelligent, spiritual, and personal Being, the Creator, Redeemer, Preserver, and Ruler of the universe. God is infinite in holiness and all other perfections. God is all powerful and all knowing; and His perfect knowledge extends to all things, past, present, and future, including the future decisions of His free creatures. To Him we owe the highest love, reverence, and obedience. The eternal triune God reveals Himself to us as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, with distinct personal attributes, but without division of nature, essence, or being.

Salvation
Salvation involves the redemption of the whole man, and is offered freely to all who accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour, who by His own blood obtained eternal redemption for the believer. In its broadest sense salvation includes regeneration, justification, sanctification, and glorification. There is no salvation apart from personal faith in Jesus Christ as Lord.

Eternal Security
Because God gives man eternal life through Jesus Christ, the believer is secure in that salvation for eternity. Salvation is maintained by the grace and power of God, not by the self-effort of the Christian. It is the grace and keeping power of God that gives this security.

The Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God, fully divine. He inspired holy men of old to write the Scriptures. Through illumination He enables men to understand truth. He exalts Christ. He convicts men of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment. He calls men to the Saviour, and effects regeneration. At the moment of regeneration He baptizes every believer into the Body of Christ. He cultivates Christian character, comforts believers, and bestows the spiritual gifts by which they serve God through His church. He seals the believer unto the day of final redemption. His presence in the Christian is the guarantee that God will bring the believer into the fullness of the stature of Christ. He enlightens and empowers the believer and the church in worship, evangelism, and service. The Bible
The Holy Bible was written by men divinely inspired and is God's revelation of Himself to man. It is a perfect treasure of divine instruction. It has God for its author, salvation for its end, and truth, without any mixture of error, for its matter. Therefore, all Scripture is totally true and trustworthy. It reveals the principles by which God judges us, and therefore is, and will remain to the end of the world, the true center of Christian union, and the supreme standard by which all human conduct, creeds, and religious opinions should be tried. All Scripture is a testimony to Christ, who is Himself the focus of divine revelation.
